my top 10 favorite albums of 2009
10. Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night of the Soul I remember seeing posters all around town in Austin at SXSW in March and being very intrigued by the premise of this project (David Lynch working with Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous with a roster of vocalists including Nina Persson, Julian Casablancas, the Flaming Lips, Suzanne Vega and Iggy Pop), so i was very disappointed when the...

5 favorite covers of 2009
my top 20 songs of the year list is coming soon along with commentary, but until then here are 5 of my favorite covers from the past year. All 5 of these are tracks that work as more than just a one-off novelty, worthy of repeated listens:
Bon Iver - “Mercury” [Kathleen Edwards cover]
Bat for Lashes - “Use Somebody” [Kings of Leon cover]
Laura Marling - “Roll...

Feist (ft. Beck + Wilco’s Nels Cline) - “Weighted Down”
via Pitchfork:
Beck is about halfway through with his latest Record Club effort, which finds him spinning Skip Spence’s 1969 LP Oar into cool new directions with help from Wilco, Jamie Lidell, Feist, and others. Track number five, “Weighted Down (The Prison Song)”, just went up, and it’s the first...

box of boom's top 50 songs of the decade
i almost drove myself crazy, or in 2000s terms, b-a-n-a-n-a-s, putting this list together. these are my personal favorites, clearly in no way a definitive list of any sort and the ranking could probably be rearranged on a daily basis. still, i had to establish some sort of criteria for myself, so i went with 50 songs, 1 per artist, all studio versions, no covers. here goes:
#50: “Let...

Vevo Arrives: Test Driving the Labels’ New Video... →
i’ve always hated how music videos are such crappy quality on YouTube, especially older ones, even on the official record label pages, so this seems like a step in the right direction. it’s not perfect by any means - tons of artists are still missing since Warner hasn’t signed on yet, and even though some older videos are on there, it’ll probably never be a complete archive...

Grizzly Bear “Two Weeks”
This animated video for “Two Weeks” by director Gabe Askew is so elaborate and elegantly crafted that it’s hard to imagine that it’s not actually the official clip for the song. Askew’s work is perfect for Grizzly Bear’s music, unfolding with fussy precision and grace while having the weight and texture of something sturdy and lived-in.
